First year

In first year students study:

  • English
  • Irish*
  • Maths
  • Religion
  • History
  • Geography
  • Science
  • Wellbeing (incorporating CSPE, SPHE and Physical Education)

(*unless your child has a Department of Education and Skills’ approved exemption).

First year students will also experience the following nine options:

  • Home Economics
  • French
  • Spanish
  • Business Studies
  • Art
  • Technical Graphics
  • Woodwork
  • Music
  • Digital Media/Coding/IT

Students choose to study four of the above optional subjects for their Junior Cycle examinations.

Some students may also study Junior Cycle approved short courses ‘caring for animals’ and ‘digital literacy’. (Two short courses are the equivalent of studying one subject).

On completion of their Junior Cycle programme we encourage all students to participate in Transition Year, before commencing their Leaving Certificate. Some students may choose to enter the Leaving Certificate Applied Programme.

Transition Year

Our Transition Year programme allows students to experience learning in new ways – at Coláiste Éamann Rís transition year is an active, student centred course which allows students time to grow, learn and mature before entering their final years of study with us.

On completion of Transition Year students may choose to enter the Leaving Certificate or Leaving Certificate Applied Programmes.

Leaving Certificate

The Leaving Certificate is a two year programme (fifth and sixth year) culminating in the Leaving Certificate Exam – the majority of our students choose the Leaving Certificate programme.

All students in Leaving Certificate study English, Irish* and Maths (*unless your child has a Department of Education and Skills’ approved exemption).

Students also study four of the following options:

  • History
  • Geography
  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • Design, Communication and Graphics (DCG)
  • Construction Studies
  • French
  • Business Studies
  • Home Economics


Leaving Certificate Applied

Acceptance onto our Leaving Certificate programme is at the discretion of the school. Students must apply for a position on one of our senior cycle courses. Only students who have studied with us for at least three years may enter the Leaving Certificate Applied Programme.
